Often times, employees in larger organizations will swap jobs for a period to truly understand how the organization as a whole works. I’m pretty sure this is called “job shadowing,” but as I write this, I’m starting to have my doubts. You get what I mean, though: Disney will do this at Walt Disney World Resort, swapping cast members (i.e. employees) between their front lines and people working in their laundry facility (for example). Front line workers walk away understanding that it would be impossible to work without clean costumes; laundry workers literally see their work in play.
Cyndi and I did this today, and let me tell you, that whole appreciation thing is totally true. I can’t speak for her, but I REALLY appreciate now what goes on when I’m at work, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got the easier job. I had this list of things I had intended to get done, right, and I did exactly one of them (and that one thing was just making a phone call). Oh, and I didn’t even have to feed myself, thanks to Justin and his spontaneous generosity. The thing I don’t get is where all the time goes. We played. I tried to get her to sleep. I walked her around the neighborhood. And then Cyndi was walking in the door!
All in all, though, it was a great day. I got to spend it with my daughter on her third (month) birthday. What more could I ask for?
